5 Spring Home and Routine Refresh Ideas
Why Spring Is the Easiest Time to Reset Your Home and Routines
January always gets the attention when it comes to fresh starts, but if you’ve ever tried to reset your routines in the middle of winter, you know how hard that can feel. Few want to walk the dog in the snow, head to the gym in dark, or freshen up the house when all you want to do is curl up with a blanket. Sure, it might be easier to do those things once they’ve become a habit… but trying to bring tons of change in the middle of winter can be especially difficult.
Then spring comes and the windows open, the light changes, and the energy in your home starts to shift. Suddenly, the idea of clearing a space, adjusting a routine, or starting something new doesn’t feel overwhelming. It feels… needed! It creates the Spring Home!
We’ve all heard of spring cleaning and there’s a reason for this, spring is a great time for change. The world is changing around us, and it is a natural time to make adjustments. Some argue that the New Year should be April 1st and that spring is the beginning of the year cycle. So, why not lean into that and use spring as a time to make a habit of the things you’d like to change!
1. Allow the Room to Feel Lighter
One of the biggest shifts in spring isn’t just outside, it’s how your home feels inside. As the days get longer, the way light moves through your home changes, and with that, it becomes easier to notice what feels heavy, cluttered, or out of place.
This is a good time to make each room feel just a little lighter but not by redoing everything. That will cause stress, need planning, and might get pushed off, what this looks like is…
- clearing out a junk drawer
- putting away heavy winter blankets
- sorting through games or books that have piled up and organizing them
- switching to softer lighting in the evenings
- fixing a small need in a room (you always reach for scissors, so put a pair in all the common rooms or you can’t find a pen, put a pen basket somewhere)
You don’t need to transform the whole space. Just pick one spot in each room and make it feel lighter and fresh. Sometimes it is the small things that make us take a sigh of relief.
Personally, when I created a pen and pencil jar for every room and added a pair of scissors… my life got a lot easier. I also breathe a little easier with my junk basket, which is simply a basket I can put random hoodies, books, and other things in… if I have to clean a space quickly. Sometimes, it is the little things.
2. Fresh Air Makes Everything Feel New Again
After months of closed windows, even a little fresh air can completely change the feel of your home. This is the time to open things up… literally.
Let the air move through your space and while you’re at it, this can also be a natural time to…
- wash windows
- freshen or swap out curtains
- clean window sills and frames
- add a simple plant near a window
- touch up the trim (if painted)
You don’t need to do it all in one day. Pick one small task each week and let it build over time. The goal isn’t perfection… it’s creating a home that feels open, clean, and lived in again.
3. Reset Your Routines, One Week at a Time
January gets all the attention with the “New Year, New Me” mindset, but if we’re being honest, it often asks us to change everything at once… and during one of the darkest, coldest, and hardest times of the year (at least for some of us).
Spring is different.
It gives you a little more energy, a little more light, and a little more motivation to actually follow through. So, instead of trying to change everything at once, this can be a time to take things one step at a time.
Start by making a simple list of things you’d like to adjust. Nothing extreme… just real, everyday changes.
Mine looked something like this:
- waking up earlier
- taking a daily walk with the dog
- reading a few pages each day (aiming for a chapter or 2)
- simplifying meals during the week
- prioritizing some self-care
- going to bed earlier
Your list might look completely different and that’s the point.
Once you have your list, choose just one thing to focus on for the week (or even two). Not everything. Just one. If it doesn’t go perfectly, that’s okay. You don’t start over, you just keep going until it feels manageable.
For me, I wanted to wake up earlier, but I knew that setting my alarm earlier right away wasn’t going to work. So, I started with going to bed earlier instead. That meant adjusting my evenings first… turning things off sooner, creating a little space to wind down.
The next week, I kept that same bedtime and then shifted my wake-up time.
After that, I added reading before bed. Then I added a little bit of self-care in the morning and evening.
Not all at once. Just one step at a time and it wasn’t perfect every day. In fact, it still isn’t, but over time, those small changes stuck because they were realistic and my mindset changed. If I am off a half an hour… it’s ok because it’s one day. If I don’t read one day, that’s ok because I read 90% of the time. The goal was change… and I did that!
If you’re using spring as a reset point, this is where to start:
- write your list
- put things in an order that makes sense
- give yourself time to adjust
- focus on one change at a time
You don’t need to rush it.
By the time summer arrives, or even by the end of the year if you keep adding, those small shifts can turn into real, lasting routines. You will be the “New You”!
4. You Don’t Need to Deep Clean Everything at Once
There’s a lot of pressure around “spring cleaning,” but it doesn’t have to look like doing your entire house all at once. A more realistic approach is to spread it out, I mean… you have the whole year.
If you think of your home in sections, you can focus on:
- one room per month
- or one main space at a time
By the time the year comes back around, your home has been fully cleaned and refreshed, without the burnout. If you have older kids, they can take ownership of their own spaces, and if weekly feels better, you can break rooms into smaller sections instead.
At our house we deep clean one common space each month, and we do a few spaces twice. We start in January with the kitchen, then move to the living room in February, and continue the rest of the year with both bathrooms, the library/music room, the front porch and back deck (yard clean up too), the kitchen, the dinning room, the 1st and second floor halls and foyer, the garage, the living room, the basement rooms (office and laundry), and both bathrooms.
Everyone works on it together, so it goes quickly, and obviously we clean up during other times. We just save the deep cleaning of each space to its own month. Our personal space, like bedrooms, are cleaned on our own schedule, and you know what… if one month is hectic and a room doesn’t get deep cleaned, oh well. You’ll get it next time!
The goal isn’t to do everything at once, it’s to make steady, manageable progress.
5. Come Back to What You Meant to Do
Spring is also a good time to revisit things that you wanted to do and didn’t get to or things that you once did… but life got in the way.
This could be:
- a weekly game night
- a simple date night at home
- writing letters or staying in touch with family
- reading again
- watching something meaningful together
These don’t have to be big things, it is simply trying again!
🌿 A Few Things That Helped Us Refresh for Spring
For April, I put together a small Amazon list with a few things we actually use this time of year or have bought to help with some of the ideas above. They’re just things that make it easier to open up your space, freshen a room, or make small changes that actually stick.
⭐ Check out my April Reset & Refresh Amazon List
You’ll find things like:
- simple items that help freshen spaces
- small cleaning and organization tools
- a few everyday swaps that make things easier
- a handful of seasonal touches or décor items that just feel good this time of year
Nothing here is required, these are just options that can support what you’re already doing.
I also put together an April playlist that feels light, steady, and easy to have on in the background. We usually play it while cooking or while cleaning up. It’s just an April soundtrack to have in the background

As always, these are just ideas. Use what fits, skip what doesn’t, and let the season unfold at its own pace.
Final Thoughts
April is a month of renewing and refreshing. It is a time to take a deep breath and appreciate the way the world is waking up. It is not meant to be spent stressing about cleaning or worrying about new wardrobes.
If you’re wanting a little more structure without adding pressure, the April section of the Family Binder was created with this in mind. It complements this post and and the spring season.
