10 Ways to a Gentle January Reset for the New Year (That Actually Work)
A Softer Start to the Year, Starting with a January Reset
Every January, I used to tell myself the same thing… “This is the year I’ll get it together.”
I’d try to reset everything, my house, my habits, even my mindset.
I suppose many of us have. We’ve been trained to think “New Year, New Me” for decades. But for most of us, few changes actually happen, fewer stick, and we end up feeling terrible about it all.
Personally, I’m torn between believing that change can happen at any time and knowing that it’s easier when the timing feels right.
For instance, our bodies naturally crave rest during the colder months. The sun sets early, evenings hit around 5 p.m., and we all seem to slow down a little. Our rhythms sync with our surroundings, whether we mean them to or not.
On the other hand, we can push through that and create new routines that help us succeed regardless of the season. It’s possible to hit the gym in the dark or tackle a new goal in winter. It just might take a little more mental energy.
Honestly, I’ve always thought spring might be the better time for big change. The days stretch longer, the air feels hopeful again, and motivation comes easier with more daylight and warmer weather. But January still has something valuable to offer… it’s like the pause before the push.
Most of us don’t need a total overhaul for the New Year… we just need a gentle refresh. Something that helps us slow down, breathe, and reconnect to what actually matters.
The Truth About Resets
Resets don’t have to be about strict routines or perfection. They can be small and meaningful things… cleaning out a single drawer, lighting a candle, drinking water before coffee, or writing down one thing you want to remember from the day.
The older I get, the more I realize a “reset” isn’t about starting over. It’s about returning to calm, to a rhythm, and more focus.
What My January Reset Looks Like
January, for me, is about two things – reflection and renewal.
After the holidays, the house feels quieter. It’s when I start fresh pages in my planner, pull out the cozy slippers, and find new ways to make our home feel both peaceful and alive again.
This year, I’ve built something special, a free printable Family Binder that you can use to plan, reflect, and reset right alongside me. It includes a January theme, journaling pages, checklists, and prompts to help you slow down and notice the good stuff again.

Small Things That Have Made a Difference to Me
Here are 10 of my favorite “reset” rituals that actually work… because they feel good, not forced!
1. Declutter one space… just one.
Start small. One drawer, one shelf, one surface that feels lighter when you see it. Momentum builds when you begin tiny.
2. Let light in.
Open the curtains, take a short walk, or stand by a sunny window. Winter light heals more than we realize.
3. Drink water before coffee.
It’s a simple act of care for your body that feels like a reset in itself.
4. Cook one comforting meal each week.
Not fancy, just comfort. Soup, chili, or something that smells like home.
5. Wake up earlier, just for you.
Ten minutes or an hour, whatever fits. Sit quietly, stretch, pray, or sip coffee without a rush. (Just skip the screens, they steal the peace.)
6. Say something nice to yourself in the mirror.
We may not hear kind words anywhere else, but we should at least hear them from ourselves. Try:
-
“You have a nice smile.”
-
“I appreciate you for figuring out dinner every day this week.”
-
“Congratulations on that 659-day Duolingo streak.”
It doesn’t have to be profound, just kind… and as a bonus, start saying one kind thing to someone else everyday too!
7. Choose a word for the month, not the year.
“Calm.” “Steadiness.” “Grace.” “Growth.” One month at a time feels doable and real.
8. Find your reset song.
That one track that helps you breathe again when life feels too loud.

9. Keep notes.
Write down one thing you want to remember from each day. Seeing your reflections, intentions, and to-dos on paper makes the process tangible.
10. Be kind to yourself while it’s all still messy.
The reset isn’t supposed to be perfect. It’s supposed to be gentle, the return to rhythm is not a race.

A Reset That Lasts
Here’s the truth, the best kind of change is the kind that leaves room for life. Your binder/planner doesn’t have to be perfect. Your home doesn’t have to look like a magazine. Just give yourself permission to reset in a way that feels kind.
That’s what this season is really about. Not changing who you are but remembering who you already are.
